The tool path needed for cutting or grinding a free-form optical
shape is not the same as the shape itself, but can be calculated so that some part
of the tool surface is tangent to every area of the optical surface at some time
during the generating process. For a free-form component the tool "path"
is a mathematical surface that can be scanned in any manner.
