To double the power and improve the manufacturability, we were ready to start over. We evaluated several alternative approaches by guesswork. The first column was the existing manufactured design. The second was a different clustering of four lasers, the third used multiple independent lasers in each small package, the fourth used lots of little lasers, the next two used grating modulators with high-power laser sources, and the last two were grouped clusters of existing laser chips, but in new packages.
