As this project was being completed, Polaroid sold off its medical
imaging products to Sterling, who contracted with the original print head supplier
to make the new design, which they did with remarkable efficiency and with obscene
profit. Most Sterling assets were later sold to Agfa. The Polaroid laser diode
manufacturing group was soon sold off as Boston Laser, Inc., which had financial
problems, laid almost everybody off, abandoned their clean rooms, and moved the last
couple of people to New York State in 2003. Polaroid filed for bankruptcy in late
2001, after most of us had left. Sometimes I think all of these troubles could have
been avoided through more general application of the development and manufacturing
ideas presented here.
